The adventures of a paratriathlete

I’m a little behind with posting about the fantastic time I had as the Breakaway from Cancer Champion at the Amgen Tour of California. Apologies for that. I’ve had a busy week at work, tapering/prepping for the big race on Monday (not to mention stressing out). I was also offered an amazing opportunity by USA Triathlon to write a few blogs for their website about my story, paratriathlon and USA Paratriathlon National Championship race. Check that out HERE.

Back to the Amgen Tour of California. Last Sunday, I had the honor of representing Los Angeles area cancer patients and survivors as the Breakaway from Cancer Champion for Stage 8 of the Amgen Tour of California. I was VERY excited even before I arrived. I was introduced to some key players in the fight against cancer who work for Amgen. It was amazing to talk to them and I’m so thankful for that opportunity. (Side note- I also got to meet Carson Daly who was there representing Breakaway from Cancer too. I kind of felt like I was 13 again. I am, after all, part of the TRL generation! Plus I listen to him every morning haha.)

After some breakfast and chatting, we went out to start the Breakaway Mile. Sponsored by Amgen, the Breakaway Mile takes place at the finish line of the Amgen Tour of California to honor the millions of cancer survivors worldwide. I got to meet some other inspiring cancer survivors as we walked through downtown Los Angeles. There were lots of photos and then I was interviewed on stage. I get a little bit nervous when I participate in events like this. I’m not out there to gain publicity for myself but rather to advocate for adolescent and young adult cancer patients and survivors everywhere. We are definitely a special group!

After that, we watched the riders come through for their last stage of the Tour of California. It was amazing to watch! These riders are incredible athletes and it definitely pumped me up for my upcoming race. When the race concluded, I went over to the Awards staging area and got ready to present Amgen’s Most Courageous Rider jersey. I presented it to Robbie McEwen who was riding his final race after a fantastic cycling career.

Presenting Robbie McEwen with his Most Courageous Rider jersey!

When this concluded, I was invited to the press conference so I could get another photo with Robbie. I was invited up to the stage and was even asked a question during the press conference! What a cool experience!

Me with some of the top cyclists in the world! And the top finishers at Amgen’s Tour of California.

I left the event thinking about what an honor it was to be selected as the Breakaway from Cancer champion and have the opportunity to interact with Amgen scientists, cancer survivors and some of the top athletes in the world. I could not be more thankful! (A special thanks to AEG and Amgen as well as Mary, Leanne, and Alison who helped me through this fantastic event!) Breakaway from Cancer is a free resource for cancer patients, survivors and their families. CHECK IT OUT!!

No I am not 5 years old. But yes, this was the little jig I sang in my head through my ENTIRE track workout this morning.

Side note: I’m 12 days away from Paratriathlon National Championships in Austin, Texas. I was pretty up in the air about racing until about 5 minutes ago. I started ramping up my training with the hopes I could race, but I went back and forth and back and forth about it. And then I bit the bullet and bought my ticket. What is the worst that could happen?

Not the best mentality for Ms. Type A/OCD about Racing over here. Now when I train I have mini-panic attacks about if I’m ready for Austin.

So back to that track workout. Well actually it all starts with Tuesday’s training. ACTUALLY it starts with me signing up for TriFit’s Back to the Beach Challenge. In order to sign up for this, I had to weigh myself (OUCH.) and have my BMI calculated (DOUBLE OUCH.)! Ugh. This was THE worst. In fact, it was a RUDE AWAKENING. Like I was embarrassed. So hopefully that will force me back into the healthy mentality. I’m there training wise but I’m definitely struggling eating wise. (Don’t we all struggle with this? Food is good.)

After seeing my BMI, I decided the silly games were over. It is time to get serious! (It was time about 3 weeks ago but my leg wasn’t listening.) I went on to my regularly scheduled workout- a spin/strength workout. I usually do part of my upper/lower body strength training, then hit the spin class, and come back out to finish the strength training and core workout.

I did my first half of strength (really pushed myself) and then walked into the spin room. Who did I see instead of my regularly scheduled instructor? Nikki. MY FAVORITE INSTRUCTOR EVER. She seriously kicks your butt more than any other instructor. She was my spin instructor at 24 and is part of the reason I became so obsessed with spinning! Best Surprise Ever. I may have screamed. Anyway, the class was HARD. I mean really hard. But I loved it!

After I headed back out to finish my workout and continued to push myself. That BMI percentage was basically tattooed on the inside of my eyelids so I was working hard.

I finally finished the workout around 8:15 and headed home. I was dead. I can’t remember the last time I slept so well!

Then my alarm went off at 5:15. Hellllloooooooo track workout. Remember that hard workout I had done less than 12 hours before? Ya. Me too!

It was one of the toughest track workouts I’ve had (I won’t bore you with the details). It hurt. My legs felt like jello. My arms felt like jello. At one point I thought I might not even be able to finish sprinting a single lap. And that’s why I sang the jello song. To focus on anything but the sound of my feet hitting the track. But you know what? When I looked at my watch to see my times, I realized I was running faster (and consistently faster) than I have in months! PROGRESS PEOPLE PROGRESS.

When we finished up, I started talking to Coach Bernard about how I was freaking out about racing. He and another member of TriFit said I looked strong on the track. SUCCESS! Just needed a little ego boost.

Then I went home. (Oops I forgot my cool down laps.)

And when I walked up the flights of stairs to my office, I nearly collapsed. Dead. Legs like jelloooooo.

Anyway, this weekend I’ll be at the Amgen Tour of California as their Breakaway from Cancer Champion. I’ll get to present the Most Courageous Rider Jersey and chat a bit onstage about my racing. Should be exciting!!
